The first ingredient, Simmondson, is a glycosidic herbal extract of the jojoba plant. This compound has been shown in animal studies to regulate appetite via the cholecystokinin pathway.1 Cholecystokinin (CCK) is a peptide hormone released whenever fat enters the stomach from a portion of the small intestine. CCK then stimulates the gallbladder to release bile for the emulsification of fat. This process decreases gastric motility causing a delayed release from the stomach and small intestine. The decrease in gastric motility stimulates the vagus nerve and sends a message to the hypothalmus, which is the appetite control center of the brain. This instructs the body how long to stay full and thus control satiety. Simmondsin is thought to either directly stimulate CCK release or bind to the same receptors as CCK. Simmondsin may also increase brown adipose tissue and metabolic rate by stimulating thyroid production.1,2 Other mechanisms involved in the fat loss properties of Simmondsin include stimulation of thyroxin and growth hormone.3 Ashwagandha root is an ayurverdic herbal extract that exerts pharmacological effects via its free radical scavenging activity.4 Ashwagandha root has been shown in animal studies to significantly increase T3 thyroid, T4 thyroid, and glucose-6-phosphatase.5 Thyroid hormone is responsible for the control of our basal metabolic rate. Another well-known ayurverdic herbal that exerts thyroid stimulating activity is Gum Guggulu (Commiphora mukul). Gugulipid is the standardized extract derived from the bark of the Mukul myrrh tree, a small, thorny tree native to India and Arabia. The main constituents of gugulipid are substances called guggulsterones. Both E-guggulsterone and Z-guggulsterone are believed to be the active ingredients. Interestingly enough, Guggulu has been shown in animal studies to stimulate T3 thyroid via similar free radical scavenging activity as Ashwagandha.6 Guggulu and Ashwagandha both caused a decrease in hepatic lipid peroxidation, which is the principal site of T3 generation.7 These two ayurverdic herbals should cause a synergistic effect upon T3 generation during any type of dieting phase in order to provide continual fat loss.
Mineral Phosphates have also been studied during hypocaloric intake due to their thyroid stimulating properties. Phosphates have the ability to stimulate thyroid production while ingesting a hypo caloric intake.8 It's thought that phosphate supplementation in obese patients on a low-energy diet enhances BMR irrespectively of the rate of weight loss. This effect seems to be, at least partly, due to an influence of phosphates on peripheral metabolism of thyroid hormones.9 In other words, the body's survival mechanism turns on when there is inadequate substrate for thyroid metabolism. So the phosphates trick the body into thinking there is more than adequate substrate for thyroid metabolism resulting in continual thyroid generation.
The promotion of non-stimulant thermogenesis is a noble but questionable task. Although, there are a few non-stimulant compounds that promote thermogenesis. Red pepper extract (Capsaicin), Ginger (Gingerols and Shoagols), and Ally-Garlic extract have all been shown to promote thermogenesis via the mild production of catecholamines. The Capsaicin and Ginger utilize similar pathways to stimulate thermogenesis. Capsaicin is an extract of red pepper that has the ability to promote dietary induced thermogenesis coupled with carbohydrate and fat oxidation.10 The capsaicin produces catecholamines and cAmp, which are involved in the process of lipolysis.11 When a dose of red pepper was given with a meal it significantly increased carbohydrate oxidation for over 2 hours after the meal.12 In another instance, when red pepper was given to a group of long distance runners with a meal they found that carbohydrate oxidation was significantly stimulated.13 Both studies confirmed that the actions of the red pepper were caused by beta-adrenergic stimulation. In other words, when red pepper is given with a meal it might have the ability to promote caloric expenditure. Since capsaicin performs its actions via beta-adrenergic stimulation it might appear that it could raise blood pressure and heart rate. Although, animal studies show capsaicin can only alter blood pressure if given in a high enough dose and allowed to enter the system at very fast rate.
Ginger is yet another spice that has shown thermogenic action. Actually, the pungent principles of ginger consisting of gingerols and shogaols are responsible for the thermogenic effect.14 These pungent principles utilize the same pathway as capsaicin. The synergistic combination of capsaicin and garlic should promote a noticeable non-stimulant thermogenic boost.
The Ally-Garlic extract has been shown in animal studies to induce thermogenesis by increasing uncoupling protein (UCP) in brown adipose tissue and promote the release of catecholamines.15 The administration of garlic disulfides without the allyl portion does not produce the same thermogenic properties. The increase of UCP in brown adipose tissue results in the promotion of metabolically active tissue. The increase in catecholamines works in conjunction with the ginger and capsaicin to produce a thermogenic response.
