Ephedra has been cultivated for its medicinal properties, especially that of promoting or boosting energy and stamina almost since the beginnings of written history. Ephedra was widely used in Asia, where it is known as Ma Huang (mahuang) and is widely used to treat asthma, bronchitis and other respiratory tract problems (a form of ephedra manufactured today, Vasopure Mini-thins, is made for this purpose). Ephedra was also known in the Americas, where it was commonly called Squaw Tea or Mormon Tea.


Description

Plants in the ephedra genus are small shrubs with long, straggly grey-green twigs and yellow or red flowers. Its appearance has led to another common name for ephedra, joint pine. The active alkaloids in ephedra, known as ephedrine and psuedoephedrine, or psuedo-ephedrine are extracted from every part of the ephedra plant. While many varieties of ephedra are grown commercially for medicinal purposes, Ephedra Sinicaor as it is also called Ma-Huang is the most widely used, as it has the greatest concentration of ephedrine alkaloids.

Effect


As described in the introduction, ephedra extract triggers the release of adrenaline in the body, which increases the body’s ability to perform physically for longer. Ephedra also triggers thermogenesis, which allows the body to turn its energy reserves contained in adipose tissue into heat – quite literally, it starts a process of burning fat. These two properties of ephedra – energy promotion and thermogenesis – mean that pure ephedra is widely used in diet pills and nutritional supplements designed to combat obesity. These two effects enhance each other, as the energy-stimulating properties of ephedra increase the desire for exercise, and a program of intense and/or extensive exercise is crucial in any weight loss regimen. However, because of the thermogenetic properties of ephedra, any exercise becomes even more efficient at shedding pounds and burning fat, as exercise puts an even higher energy demand on the body.


Uses

Ephedra was originally used primarily for its ability to boost stamina and energy levels – the ancient texts describe soma (commonly identified as ephedra) as being used by warriors before battle to turn them into lean, mean fighting machines, and by the priests of the Mithraic cult to give them endurance in performing their physically demanding rites. Athletes today often take ephedra to enhance performance and stamina – although the claims in the ancient Vedic texts that ephedra/soma will make you immortal are greatly exaggerated!
Ephedra also is used in many weight loss/fat burning formulae, as the thermogenetic properties of ephedrine make it extremely effective for this purpose – probably the most effective extract for reducing fat known. Ephedra is also used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as a treatment for asthma, hay fever, bronchitis and even the common cold.

Cautions
